The Best Type of Sod

I often get asked the question, "What is the best type of sod for my lawn?" Well the answer really depends on several different variables.  One where do you live.  Is the grass always in the sun or in the shade.  Is it always hot or does it get cold often.  Are you good about watering your lawn or do you have water restrictions that prevent you from watering as much as you need to throughout the year.  Well let me just say the best lawns often have a mixture of different types of grass for different areas of the lawn. The most common types of sod here in South Texas are Bermuda, St. Augustine, Zoysia, and Rye (Winter Grass).  Bermuda is good for areas with very little shade and not much water.  St. Augustine does well in full sun however it needs water and sometime will grow in the shady areas Bermuda will not.  St. Augustine also does well when top dressing is added to the lawn at least once a year.  Zoysia is almost the best of both can tolerate the dry really hot sun, is drought tolerant and will grow in some shade as well. For these reasons it is usually much pricier than the other two.  It has a blade larger than Bermuda but smaller than St. Augustine and it stays green all year unlike Bermuda which usually goes brown and dormant during the winter.  Rye grass is always an alternative during the winter only.  You just put down the see and it will grow very fast will stay very green all winter however as soon as the first heat waive hit it will most likely die out.  So what type of sod is the best...You decide...but for me I'm sticking with St. Augustine.

The Greener Lawn

Lawn Care ServiceEver wonder why your neighbors lawn is greener than yours, well here's the secret.  Aeration and Organic Compost!  All healthy lawns need oxygen, nutrients, and water.  To achieve the goal of the greener lawn you must first aerate with a commercial aerator, then you will need to apply a top layer, otherwise known as top dressing, of organic compost, spreading it evenly and then water.  Aerating and Top Dressing should be done late Spring or early Fall for the best results.

Weed In My Yard

Eliminate Weeds With Frequent Lawn ServiceEverybody loves weeds in their lawn right :( NO? Well let me just tell you before you go out and spray that weed-killer that you bought for your bran new lawn STOP! And read the label! Here in the south at least in San Antonio we use grass that is considered a weed in other states.  And sometimes weed-killer will kill it. So I can already hear you say it.  What do you do to get ride of the weeds?  Well that's easy you just spend all day, and all night, and maybe all week or month pulling them out. Just Kidding :) No, you call a licensed professional to take care of it for you or you can call an non-licensed professional to pull them out manually and cut your yard frequently to help eliminate them.  Remember all professionals spraying any type of herbicide is required to hold a license for it.  It does not matter if they bought it at a local store they still need to have a license.  Of course if you yourself are spraying on your own lawn then you do not need a license, but beware I have seen many yards go from nice green to dirt because owners decided to take matters into their own hands, and the new problem is now very costly.  So we hope you find this information useful and we will keep you updated with new things that we learn everyday.

Bermuda Grass Seed

Lawn Grass Seed
May is the month to plant Bermuda grass seed in San Antonio.  As you may know Bermuda does very well in the hot sun and will only sprout when conditions are right.  If the seed is put down to early or if it is just not hot enough then the seed will simply lay on the soil and birds will come and eat it up.  So don't be too anxious to put down that grass seed until you know the weather is right. Another thing to remember about Bermuda is that it is a weed in the garden and in flowerbeds and is very difficult to get rid of.  Shading the area with heavy plastic will usually do the trick.  And if you have it as your lawn remember that if you spray weed killer in your lawn to get rid of other pesky weeds your more likely to also kill your Bermuda grass so make sure it is safe for your lawn before you spray.

Oak Wilt!

Tree Trimming ServiceIf you live in San Antonio and the Hill Country area then February through May is our peak season for oak wilt.  Oak wilt is a fungus that is transferred to oak trees by several means.  As we prune oak trees during this time sap beetles will feed on newly pruned sights.  As the sap beetles feed they transfer the oak wilt spores to the oak tree.  Sap beetles are no bigger than the period at the end of this sentence.  This is the reason it is very, very important to paint all oak pruning sights with paint within 30 minutes of each cut.  It does not matter which kind paint you use as long as you paint the sight so that you prevent the sap beetle from feeding and transferring oak wilt spores.  Once an oak tree is infected with oak wilt then the roots of that tree will transfer the disease to other nearby oak trees.  For this reason it has been very difficult to control the spread of oak wilt and we loose thousands of trees every year to this devastating disease.  Remember oak wilt only affects oak trees and you only need to paint tree cuts if they are oaks.  You should always paint even when we are not in the peak season and you should alway have a licensed professional prune your trees if you decide not to do it yourself.  Painting is not a 100% guarantee however it does drastically help the spread of the disease.

When to Plant Grass in San Antonio

when to plant grass, commercial mowing serviceI have often been asked the question, "when is the best time to plant sod in San Antonio TX?" And the answer is,whenever you want.  Although grass does not grow during the colder seasons it does take root.  Spring and Summer can get pretty hot leaving you to water more frequently than if you plant in the Fall or Winter.  And since we do not have hard freezes that last for weeks at a time the grass will continue to root during our few cold days of winter.  However you must remember your not going to see that lush green lawn until Spring, so you will need to be patient.
